Over the years, Master Carver Peter Calvesbert has been asked numerous times to carve lemurs and now, after several attempts, he has succeeded. His Ring Tailed Lemurs are portrayed on the look-out, searching for trees in their native Madagascar. This island country off the southeast cost of Africa has lost 80% of its forests. The inscribed names are those of other lemurs that are highly endangered or extinct. One of them, the Aye-Aye, is considered a bad omen by some islanders and is often killed. “Kelsa”, written on the lid, is not a lemur but a UK collector who has been waiting longer than most for Peter to carve this small, arboreal primate. The interior shows a sad lemur and lots of tree stumps.
