Distinguishing Features: Tallest and heaviest of all penguin species.
Habitat: One of two penguin species that is strictly Antarctic. Some Emperors never set foot on dry land.
Height & Weight: Adults are nearly 4 feet tall and weigh between 65 and 90 pounds. Males can lose up to 50% of their weight while incubating eggs.
Population: Approximately 220,000 breeding pairs. It is believed that the population is slowly declining.
Breeding: Begin to breed at five years of age. Emperors have only one mate each year and stay faithful. Only if they cannot find each other during the next breeding season do they look for a new mate.
Nesting: Females lay a single egg and then carefully transfer it to the male who incubates the egg in his brood pouch for approximately 65 days, without food.
Behavior: Social animals that forage and nest in groups. In severe weather, they huddle together for protection.
Diet: Small fish, squid, and crustaceans.
Gender Differences: Males and females have different calls.
Lifespan: Typically live for 20 years.
Can You Believe?: They can dive up to 820 feet and can hold their breath underwater for 20 minutes!
