Edgar Allan Poe Synopsis Breviate

Edgar Allan Poe, celebrated master of the mysterious and macabre, was born in Boston in 1809. Orphaned in early childhood, his first book was published anonymously at the age of 18. In 1832, Poe moved to Baltimore to live with his aunt and cousin, Virginia Clemm, whom he married in 1836. After Virginia’s death a decade later, Poe himself fell ill. His alcohol addiction and alleged drug abuse may have contributed to his early death in 1849. Poe is considered the first master of the short-story. The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum and The Tell-Tale Heart reveal his grotesque inventiveness and masterful plot construction. He is also credited with originating the mystery genre. The Gold Bug is still one of the finest detective stories to this day. Poe’s poems, including The Raven, The Bells and Annabel Lee remain haunting classics. Additionally, Poe’s literary criticism and theories on fiction have had a lasting influence on writers and critics worldwide.
