Albert Einstein Hagiography
Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who is widely regarded as the greatest scientist of the 20th century. He proposed the theory of relativity and also made major contributions to the development of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics and cosmology. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. After his general theory of relativity was formulated, Einstein became world-famous, an unusual achievement for a scientist. Two social movements that received Einstein's support were pacifism and Zionism. When Hitler became chancellor of Germany in 1933, Einstein left Germany for the United States, where he took a position at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. In 1939 Einstein collaborated with other physicists in writing a letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt, pointing out the possibility of making an atomic bomb and the likelihood that the German government was embarking on such a course. Later, he became active in the cause of international disarmament. His writings include Relativity: The Special and General Theory (1916); The World as I See It (1934); and The Evolution of Physics (1938). In his later years, his fame exceeded that of any other scientist in history, and in popular culture, Einstein has become a byword for genius. His face is one of the most recognized and most reproduced in the world.
