Interior: "Mover A Mexico"
Synopsis Breviate Enrique Peña Nieto
Enrique Peña Nieto is the 57th president of Mexico and a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Peña Nieto was born July 20, 1966 in Atlacomulco, the home of many powerful members of PRI. The young Peña Nieto decided to pursue a career in politics after he was chosen as class leader in elementary school. He graduated in law from the Panamerican University and holds an MBA from the Monterrey Institute of Technology. From 2000 to 2002, he was Secretary of Administration, and from 2003 to 2004, he served as a Congressman of the 13th district of the state legislature. As governor of the State of Mexico from 2005 to 2011, Peña Nieto cut the state’s debt by 25% and constructed numerous hospitals and roads. He resigned in 2011 to focus on his presidential campaign. Peña Nieto won the presidential election with 38% of the vote, and began his six-year term December 1, 2012. His victory marked a political comeback for PRI, which had controlled the federal government for 70 years before a 2000 defeat. Many Mexicans worried that the return of PRI signified a return to Mexico’s past, but Peña Nieto promised that his government would operate in a more democratic and transparent fashion. He also pledged to continue the fight against organized crime and the drug trade. Since taking office, Peña Nieto has delivered on several promises. He has passed more than a dozen laws which have helped repair Mexico’s energy, banking and education sectors. He has also combatted the country’s drug trade, locking up the world’s most wanted drug lord, Joaquin Guzmán. Peña Nieto is the father of six children and is married to actress Angélica Rivera.
