Mouse Minutiae

"Mouse" comes from an ancient Sanskrit word meaning "thief."

In Ancient Egypt, a cooked mouse was used to cure a variety of ills including stomachaches.

In Ancient Greece, the God Apollo was sometimes called Apollo Smintheus, which means Apollo the Mouse. To honor him, white mice were kept in Apollo's temples under the altar.

The first to arrive in North America arrived as stowaways on ships from Europe.

A baby is called a pinky or a kitten, a female a doe, and a male a buck.

Can breed year round. Begin breeding before they reach 2 months old. Gestation is only 3 weeks. Each litter has 8-14 pups. Females can have 5-10 litters each year. If you do the math, that's 140 mice each year!

Classified as herbivores and eat a regular diet of grains and fruit, but will eat almost anything, and constantly.

Contrary to popular belief, exceptionally clean. They organize their home into areas specific for food, shelter, and bathroom purposes.

Tails are as long as their bodies. You should never pick a mouse up by its tail.

A full-grown mouse weighs between 1/2 and 1 ounce.

The average lifespan is 1 to 2 years, but they often succumb earlier to predators.

To this day some people believe that fried mice or mouse pie is a cure for bedwetting!
