Occurs in two distinct colors: red and gray

Distribution: Eastern North America from Eastern Montana and the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico; from Southern Ontario to Florida, and South to Northeastern Mexico
 
Happy in a variety of habitats, from city parks to dense hemlock to suburban backyards
 
Non-migratory, year-round resident in its breeding range
 
An opportunistic feeder, taking a wide range of prey and sometimes tackling animals bigger than itself
 
Strictly nocturnal
 
Very aggressive in nest defense and has been known to attack humans who come too close
 
Nests in hollowed-out tree cavities or old woodpecker holes
 
Surprisingly swift and agile flier despite its short-tailed, non-aerodynamic shape and design
