LEWIS CARROLL ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll, was a mathematician, photographer, and writer whose playful imagination bridged logic and fantasy. The eldest son of a country reverend, he grew up inventing games for his ten siblings and later found joy in entertaining children with clever puzzles and stories.

While teaching mathematics at Oxford, he befriended the dean, Henry Liddell, and began entertaining his children—especially Alice, who inspired some of his most famous tales. After listening to one particularly enchanting story, she exclaimed, “Oh Mr. Dodgson, I wish you would write out Alice’s adventures for me!” He did as she asked, illustrating the tale himself, and gifted it to Alice. When a visiting novelist later read the manuscript, he urged Carroll to publish it.

Revised and brought to life by new illustrations by John Tenniel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland appeared in 1865, followed by Through the Looking-Glass in 1871.

This Light Book pays tribute to both of these timeless works, featuring Tenniel’s imagery and the whimsical Jabberwocky poem.
