Mary Vaux Walcott (1860–1940) was an American artist and naturalist known for her exceptional botanical illustrations. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she developed a love for painting early in life after receiving a watercolor set at the age of eight. This passion became a lifelong pursuit, particularly focused on capturing the beauty of wildflowers.

Spending over four decades exploring the Canadian Rockies, Walcott meticulously documented the region’s diverse flora. Her detailed, vibrant botanical studies were widely recognized for their scientific accuracy and artistic beauty.

In 1914, she married Charles D. Walcott, a prominent geologist, paleontologist, and secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Her work culminated in the 1925 publication of North American Wild Flowers, a five-volume collection featuring 400 of her paintings. The Smithsonian’s release of this series solidified her reputation as a leading botanical artist of her time, praised for her ability to combine scientific precision with artistic elegance.
