“Millie’s Maidens” is Peter’s first portrayal of hens, recent additions to his backyard garden. He reports that they are great fun to watch, and when they aren’t being carried around by his daughter Millie, they are scratching about looking for grub. Peter was surprised at how much personality they have. He can even tell which chicken laid which egg from its colour and pattern. Inscriptions on the lid show two U.S. varieties that are popular in the U.K. - the Rhode Island Red and the Plymouth Rock – as well as the name of Peter’s pair – the Light Sussex. The inscription “Aunt Foda” references the Harmony Kingdom “personality” that many of you may know. She was recently visiting the U.K. and saw the piece being carved. She fell in love with it and said she must have it. For being Peter’s first customer, her name appears on the model. The interior shows a clutch of five eggs, three of which have hatched, a crocodile, a penguin and one actual baby chick.
